Buccaneer Heroes is a full tabletop adventure game, not a small print-and-play mini.
Many print-and-play games are short “microgames” built around simple bingo sheets or small puzzles. Buccaneer Heroes instead offers a complete tabletop experience with exploration, combat, events, character progression, and multiple ways to play.
The core rules and game sheets remain the same across all sessions. Alternate maps and rule variants mainly adjust difficulty or add strategic complexity rather than changing the game into completely different puzzles.
Yes. Buccaneer Heroes was designed with solo play as a core pillar.
The game also supports multiplayer games of up to six players. Solo and multiplayer gameplay are nearly identical.
In multiplayer games (2–6 players), players cooperate by pooling dice to attack difficult targets together, then share the rewards. Players may also attack each other when landing on special tiles on their map. Player-vs-Player (PvP) is not part of the default game, so all players must agree to allow PvP before starting a new session. Each player may only be attacked by another player once per game.
In single-player games, you may roll additional dice beyond your unlocked Attack Dice. Each extra die represents a non-player character (NPC). This allows you to form a team of up to three characters: the player and up to two NPCs.
After a successful plunder, the loot must be shared with the NPCs by dividing the total loot by the number of participants (including NPCs).
NPC cooperation can also occur in two-player games. The attacking player may ask the other player to lend them their dice, and one additional NPC die may be added, forming a three-member team: two human players and one NPC.
Only two A4 pages per player need to be printed. No cutting or 3D printing is required. All other materials can be used digitally or printed optionally.
Event cards - required to play the game - are provided as a low-resolution PDF for easy on-the-go use, and as a separate high-resolution file for printing and cutting. Optionally, one of the game sheets (the map) can be printed on A3 paper, as it is designed in a higher resolution that supports A3.
Afterwards, players only need a pen or pencil and at least one six-sided die - though having up to ten is ideal.
Although each player has their own game sheets, some actions permanently affect the shared world.
First, when a settlement is attacked, all players must cross it off their maps. The settlement becomes off-limits for further attacks, and trade is only possible if a player possesses a Negotiator specialist.
Second, Buried Treasures and Mystic Sites are unique locations. Once a player claims the reward at one of these sites, it becomes unavailable to all other players.
Third, an optional rule introduces random cargo prices instead of prices based on settlement size (the default system). When playing with this rule, the first player to visit a settlement announces its cargo prices to everyone.
A normal game lasts about 24 short rounds divided into eight seasons.
The first solo playthrough can take up to 60 minutes (or around 90 minutes if you are learning the rules). Experienced players can finish the game in around 30 minutes. Multiplayer games can take up to two hours.
The game's various modes can also increase play time. For example, Buccaneer Heroes includes a Campaign Mode (Game+), where players can complete multiple 24-round games while carrying over certain items and achievements.
Yes. The game includes several difficulty modes:
• Easy (default)
• Medium (Corsair Mode)
• Hard (Marauder Mode)
• Very Hard (Buccaneer Mode)
• Ultimate Difficulty (Buccaneer Hero Mode)
Buccaneer Hero Mode enables all of the game's alternate rules. These include:
• Buccaneer Mode (Very Hard Mode)
• Sinking
• Upwind Penalty
• Campaign (Game+)
• Random Cargo Prices
• Three Identical Dice
• PvP
Cards initiate Events. Many provide immediate rewards, while others introduce goals (such as buried treasure or mystic site locations), mini-games, or combat scenarios that must be resolved. Combat events are usually optional, though later events require players to overcome unskippable foes.
There are two types of event cards: Global Events and Chance Events. Global Events are triggered every three rounds and must be resolved by all players at the same time. Chance Events are triggered individually when a player sails onto a Shallow tile.
Some events (mostly Global) can be completed cooperatively, or resolved with one player rolling certain scenario outcomes for everyone. More elaborate events act like mini-games, requiring players to meet specific conditions or outcomes. Other events simply ask players to make a decision or choose between different rewards.
Each season has a specific wind direction. Sailing with the wind doubles movement distance, while sailing upwind is one of the ways players can enter Shallow tiles to initiate Chance Events. An alternate rule gives players a two-move handicap while sailing against the wind (for advanced players).
The game draws inspiration from real Caribbean piracy, real myths, legends, events, characters, and more.
Fantasy is present, but not the main focus until the very end, where one of six calamities threatens the world.
Combat happens in two phases using two six-sided dice pools: Attack Dice (1–5) for Cannon Combat and Duel Dice (1–3) for Duel Combat. Cannon Combat uses a rank-based dice battle where the strongest dice face each other in order. If the defender still has at least one die after three combat turns, the player may end the battle or continue as Duel Combat, where the outcome depends on the player's Reputation.
Players earn points for acquisitions and accomplishments. Completing full sets grants an additional three points in the final tally. Endgame monsters may deduct points, while certain character encounters provide bonus points. The player with the highest total score wins. A Life After Piracy chart then shows who you became after retiring from piracy.
Three allies can be encountered during various events. If a player meets all three, a bonus event is unlocked for all players, bringing special rules and a chance for great wealth. Allies may also help, or hinder, players during later events.
Buccaneer Heroes is rated 14+ because it explores realistic themes from the Golden Age of Piracy.
The game does not portray piracy in a purely cartoon style and includes some of the harsher realities sailors and pirates faced in the 17th century. An alternate PG version of the events is also included, allowing groups to play with lighter thematic content if preferred.
Yes. You will be addicted!
Players experience only one of six events (Global and Chance) each season, meaning different events will appear in every playthrough. The game also supports multiple play styles. Players may focus on upgrading Attack or Endurance, each creating a different strategic approach.
Magical Relics further change how the game unfolds. Some allow players to teleport, gain additional options in ports, continue combat as long as they have moves remaining, or even change the wind. One such Relic can also unlock the elusive ally Oya, the goddess of storms.
Reputation adds another strategic layer, particularly because it is tied to Duel Combat. With many possible combinations of upgrades, relics, and events, players can experiment with different strategies each time they play.
